hi, I'm Janine!

The hook behind Odd the Hook

I've had a crochet hook in my hand for more than 10 years, and I'm still learning, experimenting and asking myself, 'How could I crochet that?'

That's what I love about crochet. There's always another colour to try, another shape to figure out, or some completely unexpected thing that makes you wonder whether it could be made from yarn.

But I've also experienced the less-fun side of creativity: the pressure to get things right. The fear of making a mistake can be surprisingly good at stopping you from making anything at all.

That's why I created Odd the Hook.

My crochet classes are designed to be a place where creativity matters more than perfection. I don't want any makers to think there's only one right way to crochet, or that their project has failed because it doesn't look exactly like the picture.

Instead, I teach the skills behind crochet — the stitches, shapes, construction, colour and techniques — and then give students room to experiment with them.

We might start with a pattern or a challenge, but where we end up is often much more interesting.

A wonky stitch? Excellent.

A mystery shape? Let's figure out what it wants to be.

A completely unexpected creation? Even better.

How we do things differently:

We celebrate the messy, the wonky and the things that don't quite go according to plan. Mistakes are part of learning — and sometimes they're where the best ideas start.

Students don't just learn to follow instructions. They learn how crochet works, giving them the confidence to adapt, experiment and eventually create their own ideas.
